Taking my 2 1/2 Year Old Daughter Fishing, or should I say Rock Throwing?

Have any of you had the pleasure of taking your 2 1/2 year old daughter fishing for the first time? Well actually, it was a rock throwing trip more than a fishing trip, but it showed me what love is. Who knew that a little girl throwing rocks into a flowing river would have anything to do with love?

I find it so ironic that I used to think I knew what love was. That was before Cameron came into this world though. Since she's been around, things have changed. Hell, I was married for 7 years and didn't have a clue what love was about. I of course would have told you that I did. And I truly believed that I did as well. It's not that I was consciously lying to everyone around me. Not at all. I really, really, really thought I knew. But then I found myself standing next to a flowing river with my daughter, on her first river fishing trip. I was tossing a worm around trying to fool a trout, and after watching me for about 5 minutes, Cameron had seen enough of this "fishing" thing. It was time for rock throwing to begin. And she threw rocks for the better part of 2 hours, while dad spent the time drowning a worm. I was so engulfed in being with her, talking to her, showing her the few trout that I did mange to catch, that I suddenly realized: This is what love is.

Not caring that someone was throwing rocks into the water in the place where I'm trying to catch a fish, is love. At least in my weird, messed up perception of the world. There's no doubt about it. There was a time that a little kid throwing rocks into the water where I was fishing would have sent me into a tirade. But not this time. I was as happy as she was, and I suppose that's what it's all about. Although if that kid weren't my daughter, I'm not sure the realization would have been the same.

Not to mention the fact that anytime I say, "Cam, do you want to go fishing?" now, she starts jumping up and down screaming, "Yes, Yes, Yes". For a guy who has a fairly serious fishing addiction, this little jewel of information may be better than discovering what love is. She will happily go fishing, or I should say rock throwing anytime that I feel like it. That has to be one of the best things to ever happen to me. Well, to be truthful, Cam is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Shad or more precisely American Shad is more often than not over looked as a species of fish suitable for fly fishing. And what a shame that is. First off unlike many other more common and perhaps glamorous species shad numbers are often very healthy and getting healthier. North Carolina's Neuse River, for one, boasts of a huge resurrection in shad numbers. Oregon's Columbia River shad numbers over 2 million fish annually. The legendary Delaware River has over 300 miles of shad habitat. So why are shad frequently ignored by fly fishers?

I suppose tradition as much as anything. Most of us were raised fly fishing for trout, steelhead or perhaps salmon. Anything that did not taste good in the frying pan or over an open fire was reduced to the status of trash fish. But as fly fishing has migrated from eating your catch to more likely releasing your catch, so has fly fishing. Not that shad aren't good to eat, many people consider them a delicacy, and although bony and difficult to fillet there are ways to slow cook them as to melt the smaller bones altogether.

The American Shad is an anadromous fish, migrating from fresh water to salt water and back again to spawn. Migrating season varies widely with the location. Temperature plays a large part in the migrating season. The further south one is the earlier the season. In Florida's St. Johns River for example the season can begin in November. Further up in north the Roanoke run starts in February usually peaking in March. More northern reaches might not start in earnest until June, particularly on the west coast.

What really makes shad a treat for fly fishers, besides their numbers, is their incredible fighting ability. Nicknames in various locations as 'poor man's salmon' or 'poor man's tarpon' they have a well deserved reputation as literally ripping a fly on a run that will send you and your reels screaming with delight.

The best time to fish for shad is low light conditions preferably early morning or overcast days. Evening times generally produce fewer strikes, perhaps their interest is on the reason for their return at this time. It is generally thought shad are not actively feeding inland; although this opinion varies widely from location to location. In general the longer shad have been in the fresh water the less interested in food they. However shad can and do return to the ocean after spawning. Unlike pacific salmon their digestive tract remains intact. Undoubtedly some strikes will be aggression, some instinctual, some curiosity, and some out of hunger.

Shad's primary food source in the ocean is plankton, but they will eat other common sources of food. Plus since they were born in fresh waters, sources of food there are not going to be totally foreign. Nevertheless most fly fishing for shad is done with brightly colored patterns offering lots of movement. Woolly Buggers, Clousers, and Crazy Charlies are all common offerings for shad.

Wet fly swing is probably the most effective technique for shad. Imparting motion can help when nothing is working. Also allow your fly to hang down for a good fifteen seconds at the end of each cast. Often times they will grab, and I do mean grab, and the end of a swing. Shad hit hard, be ready, but stay calm. They will hook themselves.

Shad feed in schools in the ocean, and move in schools upriver. They tend to set up camp in seams, below rapids, and move all at once. They are light sensitive, but many sunny days they do adjust to the light by midday. Although your best slam dunk time is early morning. Vary sink rates and depths until you find one, and then don't leave the spot you find them.

Shad weigh in at 2-3 lbs. for males and five pounds or so for females. Size can vary depending on location. Hickory Shad common in Washington D.C. are smaller. Depending on river size 7-9 wt rods are recommended. Sink tip lines in most situations are helpful especially if fishing large rivers, you want to get your fly down quickly.

Essential Fishing Tackle For The Beginner

If you're a beginner in the world of fishing then a quick rundown of the most common types of fishing tackle is an excellent place to begin your education. Once we have covered these basic elements you will have a better idea of what is needed to fill up your fishing tackle box.

Lures are the first, and possibly only, thing people think of when they hear the term fishing tackle. Lures are usually intended to imitate the look and movement of real fish. This will accomplish one of two objectives. The fish will either see the lure as food or as a challenge to their territory. Either response is likely to cause the fish to strike. No fishing tackle box would be complete without lures.

Next we come to flies, which are similar in purpose to lures and yet are different enough in the world of fishing tackle to earn separate mention. An entire art form has grown out of the attempts to create flies that will fool a fish into striking. Yes the world of fishing tackle has spawned an art form.

No lure or fly would be useful in your collection of fishing tackle unless they are combined with a hook. Single hooks, triple hooks, barbed or not, a hook is needed on every lure or fly to ensnare and hold the fish.

Finally we come to floats and sinkers. Your fishing tackle is not complete without floats and sinkers which take on a special significance. Experienced fishermen know that different types of fish are best caught at specific depths. The wide variety of floats and sinkers will place your bait at the specific depth most commonly associated with the type of fish you're trying to catch.

So now you know the most basic elements of fishing tackle. Of course we have only scratched the surface but you do now have the basics of fishing tackle jargon. Let these basics of fishing tackle be your first step on your journey into the wonderful world of fishing.

As you progress you will find more advanced fishing tackle and equipment available on the market.
For example a new exciting Remote Control Fishing Lure is very exciting. It is driven and controlled from a controller mounted on the fishing rod handle and can be driven into places where never before accessed by casting traditional lures.

Of course, you cannot talk about fishing tackle without discussing bait. To catch different kinds of fish, you needed to use different kinds of bait. You will also learn that you can't simply bait the hook and throw it into the water and then just sit there. You will need to use different techniques like how to "jiggle" the bait, cast it out and reel it back in, "drag" the bottom, and numerous other techniques to get the fish to bite.

The best person to talk to about which fishing tackle and which bait to use is the your fishing and bait shop.

Fishing On River Teith, Scotland.

This year we had the pleasure of fishing for sea trout, trout and Salmon in callander in Scotland on the river Teith.

The water quality and clarity is excellent, the area beside the car park in callander town centre provides excellent wading. The wading is easy going, with a smooth sandy bottom to the river.

Fly Fishing

All though most angles visit this river for it's runs of salmon and sea trout the growing brown trout population is often overlooked. We had a number of small brown trout on the dry fly and one or two on small nympths.

Equipment

9ft 6-7 Fly Rod on Dry fly Line

Sea Trout

This perhaps my favourite type of fishing, in the dark, up to your waste in water. We found that on this water you need a decent downpour of rain to get any kind of run of sea trout.

The pools, at the meetings and just at the bridge is where we found most of our action, casting our fly just below the tree's on the far bank. We lost (I know terrible but it happens to us all) two or three decent fish and landed one 4lb fresh run sea trout.

Equipment

We were using 10ft 8wt single hander Airflow sls fly rods, these provided excellent casting and bite detection

Salmon

We had little luck on the fly with the salmon but did not anglers with two handed fly rods and heavy brass tube flies seamed to have more luck. In desperation we switched to spinning tactics using Flying C's we landed two 10lb salmon that were rather coloured.

Upon speaking to the Balif we discovered that this is the norm for this venue. However it was good sport.

Our Opinion

The venue is relatively cheap for salmon fishing, everyone is happy to help the more novice angler. Wading is easy and safe. Good choice of sport from trout fishing to salmon fishing. We would give this venue 4/5

Excellent Fishing Rods for that Perfect Fishing Experience

Today's fishing rods have incorporated modern features that are not typical of the more primitive cane pole. Modern fishing rods contain reels, which aid in the retrieval of fish caught in its bait.

A much-sophisticated feature is the spinning rod where the entire shaft of the rod except the handle can move around on its axis to allow flexibility when fish caught on snare bait struggles through the water.

Like the classic cane fishing rods, the fishing gadget is thick at the handle (bottom) and is tapered and thinner at the tip. This very basic design allows handling stability and flexible movement of the entire length of the shaft.

Types of Fishing Rods and Specifications

A typical fishing rod measures 6 and 16 feet (2 and 5 m) and vary in capability to tolerate strain in fishing activity. The length has a lot to do with withstanding force exerted by the fish to the pole and determines for the most part the performance of rods used for angling.

Cane Poles

Cane poles are one of the smallest and less sophisticated gadgets in fishing. It is usually made of bamboo or other flexible wood material with the most basic fly line attached to it.

Unlike other more sophisticated fishing rods, cane poles do not usually contain reels or its equivalent to be used for reeling in or retrieving fish caught on bait. This very same action is known as angling.

Spinning Rods

These types of rods are the most popular today. They can be used either for heavyweight or lightweight fish although they were proven best for trout, walleye and bass fish. They vary in measurements from 5 and 7 feet (1.5 and 2.5 m).

Spinning poles are commonly used in bass fishing competition accounting for their flexibility and tolerance to stress. They accommodate bigger and tougher fly lines and stabilize them to avoid line tangles during uncoiling of float lines.

Jigging Rods

These rods are best for heavy lures and baits especially when reaching around 180 to 200 feet under the ocean's surface. They are made of fine, solid materials which accounts to their heaviness. The use of jigging rods is specifically due to alternating currents during the fishing activity.

Some oceans have erratic undersea current. That is why the bait and fly lines should be kept in place. Lures are also disturbed and cause confusion among fish if the lines are not long and heavy enough to withstand and tolerate water currents under the sea.

These rods are best for target fishes usually found dwelling at the bottom of the sea such as halibut and cods.

Using a Fishing Rod

Rods are basically made from carbon. Plastic, composite carbon combined with Kevlar, which is a kind of material that is bullet proof, or just high carbon. Since the carbon's force and strength in connection to its mass is light, making it strong material that can allow thinner fabrication but still is able to keep the span and length. 1. How frequent and where do you fish? Are you a beginner, a weekend warrior, or a tournament pro? If you are just starting out, you may need to budget and spend less money on your first rod. Once you learn the techniques and once you have decided that fishing is for you, that is the time to spend on more specific rods.

2. Freshwater or Saltwater fish? While there are a few rods that can be used for both fresh and saltwater fish, most rods are made for a specific purpose and application.

3. Spinning or Casting? The species you that you choose to chase will determine it.

4. Power, sensitivity, and your technique. The rod should match the way you enjoy fishing. If you like to fish with lures, then you should look for a rod that is comfortable enough to cast frequently all day long.
